Help Prevent Abnormal Raised Scarring from Surgery with KELO-COTE®

Looking After Your Surgical Scar

Two weeks after surgery your scar should be healing, but it can take from six weeks to three months before you’re fully healed. There are some things you can do during the healing process to prevent an abnormal scar forming and improve the appearance of your scar:

  • Massaging your scar is an important part of your treatment regime. Remember to do a ‘dry massage’ before applying any moisturiser or silicone gel.

  • Avoid too much exposure to the sun. Scar tissue is very sensitive, this makes it very easy for scars to get sunburnt.

  • Extremes of temperature can make itchy scars worse, particularly heat so avoid very hot baths or showers.

  • Applying a silicone gel such as KELO-COTE® advanced formula to a healed scar will help flatten, soften and smooth raised scars.

  • How soon can I use KELO-COTE® after injury?

    It is best to use KELO-COTE® after the wound has healed and there are no scabs remaining, or after your sutures are removed. With burns you need to wait until the skin has healed over.

  • Can I use it on old scars as well?

    Yes, you can use it on both old scars up to 4 years’ old and new scars.

  • Is KELO-COTE® waterproof?

    Yes, KELO-COTE® is waterproof.

  • Do I need to wash my scar before or after using KELO-COTE®?

    Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying KELO-COTE.

    After your stitches, clips and dressings have been removed you should be able to wash normally.

  • Will people notice KELO-COTE® on my skin?

    KELO-COTE® spray and gel are colourless and invisible when dry. KELO-COTE® UV is slightly cloudy due to the inclusion of the UV filters.

  • Will KELO-COTE® make my scar disappear?

    KELO-COTE® advanced formula is designed to improve the physiological and cosmetic appearance of the scar. We cannot guarantee that it will make your scar disappear completely.

  • Is KELO-COTE® suitable for children?

    Yes, KELO-COTE® is suitable for use on children from 3 months of age (Gel & UV 3 months+, Spray 12 months+).

  • How long do I need to use KELO-COTE® for to see an improvement?

    The recommended minimum treatment time for KELO-COTE® is 60 to 90 days. If you continue to see improvement at the end of the 90 days you can continue treating your scar. For older scars it is likely that you will need to continue for longer than 90 days.

  • Does KELO-COTE® offer sun protection for my scar?

    KELO-COTE® Scar Gel UV has added SPF 30 to help protect scars from the aggravating effects of the sun. It is important to reapply sun protection to the scar.
